Distance brings closeness
Distance brings closeness
One of the greatest side effects of crossing the Ocean for an indefinite amount of time, was that suddenly people talked to me. ‘Really talked to me’. In all openness and vulnerability. They told me things that they had never before.
Questions. Deep sharing. Apologizes. Acknowledging me and our relationship.
Perhaps they didn’t realize themselves that it was all still there, until I announced that I would leave. I suspect that the fact that I almost would be ‘gone’ for a longer time, triggered something. They didn’t want to stay with it.
They took it as an opportunity to clear the air.
The result? It brought us closer. Furthermore, it created more honest relationships.
It takes courage to do this.
Many of us have never learned how to do this. It can be scary, since exactly that person we care so much about, we feel the most vulnerable with. We feel the fear of being rejected, when we want to open our hearts.
Honest and open communication is something we can learn. Yes, there are many books on how to communicate and admitted, that also helped me. But in the end, how do we learn best? By doing and risking.
While feeling this fear, keep in mind that sharing and connecting from the heart is the most beautiful gift. Not everybody is receptive to it, but you could be surprised.
One person needs to make this first step. Believe me, it’s so worth it. ;)
Where do you feel some unfinished business? Will you be the one to reach out this time?
